the Lakes Region of New Hampshire since 1956
In 1956 a handful of dedicated citizens founded the Lakes Region
Scholarship Foundation with the mission of promoting and encouraging
scholarships and opportunities for higher education among residents of
the Lakes Region. Their purpose was to simplify and consolidate the
application process for local students; to review
rate applications; to facilitate the selection process for donors; to
distribute scholarships to qualifying applicants; to act as a
clearinghouse to receive scholarship funds from various donors; and to
encourage the establishment of additional scholarships
Since its founding in 1956, the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation has
awarded nearly $4.9 Million to almost 4,500 students pursuing higher
education. The Foundation, however, is merely the conduit. It is the over
500 donors (not including the thousands who have contributed to specific
memorial funds or special fundraisers over the past 58 years) who deserve
the credit for this proud record. They are the ones who have been
extending a helping hand to local students looking to continue their
education and fulfill their career goals. Many of our donor funds are
very specific: some donors are interested in specific majors and many
target specific high school graduates, such as only a Laconia or Gilford
or Belmont High School graduate (see donor tab).
In 2014 thanks to the generosity of 224 donors or donor
funds, we are awarding a total of $273,550 to 282
students. About 40% of our funds were awarded to graduating high
school seniors, with the balance going to upperclassmen. We wish to
remind students that our support does not stop after their freshman
year. Our applications will be mailed at the end of January 2015 to
this year’s applicants (unless they are graduating from college),
giving them an opportunity to reapply by the due date of April 15,
Our scholarships really
make a difference to our local students. Their thank-you notes tell us
that the dollars awarded through the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation
make a positive impact on their college costs. To view some of the
thank-you notes, select the “Success Stories” link above. But sometimes,
importantly, we prove that someone in the community really cares about
them. Our awards say that we believe in them and want to help them reach
their educational and career goals. It’s the donors who really make this
